SCOTTISH ARTIST, SETTING THE ART WORLD ON FIRE
Airdrie-based artist Derek Collins is already causing a stir with his truly unique "flaming art" style and is set to fan the flames of his success in the coming months by launching exciting and unusual new elements to his work.
Derek (53) uses a distinctive technique he describes as "flaming art" to create stunning pieces that are being exhibited in a growing number of galleries around the country and have been snapped up by fans across the globe.
He recently painted an iconic naked image of Scottish comedian Billy Connolly emerging from the Clyde which he set on fire to create a striking piece of art, which was auctioned off for charity raising over £2000.
Blending carefully selected resins, powders, pigments and liquids, Derek creates abstract textured paintings which come to life when he adds the final key ingredient – fire. By setting the entire painting alight, Derek creates fabulous effects, which leaves each piece looking and feeling, spectacular. Each piece is completely unique providing flexible art that can be commissioned to fit any shape, size, colour or texture. Images can also be supplied, which he can paint onto canvas, acrylic or any surface before carrying out the flaming effect.
A painter and decorator by trade, Derek discovered the flaming technique several years ago while experimenting with decorative paint effects on his stone floors. The flaming art technique is completely unique to Derek's work and is not used by any other artist in Scotland and indeed the UK. As a final touch, Derek adds lines of poetry from Scottish bards to the backs of many of his paintings, adding another one-of-a-kind feature to each piece of art.
