In her work Mary aims to do justice to the land and the sea which she sees before her in Scotland. They are her passion and the reason she never struggles for inspiration.
She loves to make new discoveries and finds new visions around each corner, but equally
she has certain favourite locations of which she never tires and returns to these over and over
again, often finding a new light or element to capture.
It is Scotland's ability to surprise, no matter how well you think you may know her, which has always amazed Mary – long may it continue to do so!
Mary paints using only acrylics. She finds they sit well with her technique which is one of broad application and rapidly working the paint. The fast drying paint has to be manipulated quickly and she attributes the sense of movement and spontaneity within her work to this method.
Mary trained under the tutelage of Norrie Kirkham, Peter Howson and David Linley at Glasgow School of Art, all of whom, along with the brilliant Scottish Colourists, remain a huge inspiration to her.
